Renegade came to us with a double launch — the official Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG, a full skill-based tabletop role-playing game, and Dungeon Crawler Carl: Unstoppable, a solo and co-op card-crafting deck-builder. Both are licensed adaptations of Matt Dinniman’s best-selling novels, a series with a devoted readership that arrived to the campaign with strong opinions about tone.
That was the real brief. Get the personality right. The dungeon is brutal, the System is sardonic, and the heart sneaks up on you — miss any one of those and the most loyal backers feel it immediately.
So we built the teaser as a descent: the quiet before the floor collapses, the drop into neon-lit chaos, and the AI’s deadpan commentary doing the comedic lifting. The two products reveal in sequence rather than competing for the frame.
Everything was rendered and scored in-house — 3D environments, character beats, and an original sound pass that gave the System its voice — then cut to land its hook before autoplay mute kicks in.
Previz locked the rhythm before a single frame was rendered: the hush before the floor gives way, the plunge into the dungeon’s neon, and the System’s deadpan landing the laugh — the same beats readers can quote by heart.
From there it was all in-house craft. 3D environments and character work, a grade that keeps the menace warm, and an original score and sound pass voicing the AI — cut to hook a scrolling backer before the audio ever loads.
They nailed the tone our readers are obsessive about — funny, brutal, and somehow heartfelt in ninety seconds.
